Datuk Seri Najib Razak claimed that the revised cost for the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) at RM44 billion is proof that the project is not a means to bail out 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) as previously alleged.
The former prime minister told reporters that after appearing for his SRC trial on Tuesday, adding that the new ECRL plans, which will bypass Bentong and Gombak, would make a four-hour journey become one that lasts more than five hours, hence defeating the purpose of wanting to provide shorter travel periods to those living in Bentong or Mentakab to head to the capital daily.
Najib also criticised the decision by the new government to allow Chinese state-owned China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) to operate and maintain the ECRL project through a 50:50 joint venture with Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd (MRL).
