A new study from Swedish publisher Scientific Reports says owning a dog is associated with reduced cardiovascular disease and death. 3.4 million people were part of the study, which took place over a 12 year period.
The study found that people living alone who own a dog can decrease their risk of death by 33%, and their risk of cardiovascular related death by 36%, compared to people living alone without a dog. Chances of a heart attack in people living alone with a dog were also found to be 11% lower.
As for multi person households, the benefits of owning a dog were still there, just to a lesser extend. These dog owners can decrease their risk of death by 11%, and their chances of cardiovascular related death by 15%. Their risk of having a heart attack, however, was not reduced by owning a dog.
Okay, so there’s some fairly obvious reasons as to why these findings are the case. First of all, dog owners are more likely to be more active and get more cardio exercise due to the fact that they have to walk their dog. And secondly, dogs are just awesome and can completely reduce stress just by being present with you, which anyone who has ever pet a dog just instinctually knows. So, in conclusion, dogs just make everything better, and everyone should own one.
So if you’re still trying to convince your parents, family, or significant other to adopt a dog this holiday season, feel free to share this video with them and remind them that owning a dog can literally extend your life.
Alright guys now I wanna know what YOU think of the study--are you surprised by the findings, or is this info a no-brainer, with or without the study?
