Space Jam 2 is officially in the works
And now another basketball legend is filling Michael Jordan’s shoes
It’s been over 20 years since the movie Space Jam came out, and now it looks like a sequel is finally coming soon.
If you remember, way back in 1996, basketball legend Michael Jordan teamed up with the Looney Tunes characters to create a movie that was half live action and half animated. The plot was a bit goofy, but audiences loved it. The film opened at No. 1 in the U.S. and went on to make $230 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing basketball film of all time.
Given the success of the first Space Jam, it’s not surprising that they wanted to make a sequel. We don’t know why it took so long to put one in the works, but now it’s finally happening.
Sadly, Michael Jordan won’t be one of the main characters this time around, but another basketball legend is taking his place.
It was announced yesterday that LA Lakers player LeBron James would be the star of the new film, along with Mr. Bugs Bunny, of course. The 33-year-old got his first shot at acting in the 2015 rom-com Trainwreck, and now he’s coming back for more.
There aren’t many details on what the plot will be, but we have a real good feeling about this one. Why? Because Black Panther director Ryan Coogler is producing it! LeBron said he loved Ryan’s vision for Black Panther, so it just felt like the right choice.
He told The Hollywood Reporter QUOTE “The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie. It's so much bigger. I'd just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don't just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people.”
Filming reportedly won’t start until 2019, during the NBA off-season, but we seriously can’t wait to see this movie. What do you guys think? Are you excited for another Space Jam?
