Did Taylor Swift just reveal she was cheated on by Jake Gyllenhaal? Well, according to the internet, yes. Yes she did.
Leave it to the Twitterverse to crack the latest pop culture mystery: Who is Taylor Swift’s newest song, Babe, about? AKA... WHO cheated on her? The lyrics to Sugarland‘s newest sure-to-be-a-hit banger, that Taylor wrote AND is featured on, heavily alludes to a past relationship that ended because he pulled a Tristan Thompson... too soon?
The lyrics reveal “Since you admitted it, I keep picturing her lips on your neck, I can’t unsee it / I hate that because of you, I can’t love you babe."
Definitely points to cheating, am I right or am I right? Not to mention, back in 2013, Taylor’s co-writer on the track, Train’s Patrick Monahan, said in an interview with ABC News Radio QUOTE “"It’s her song; I was just lucky enough to be a part of it with her... I’m not going through different relationships and breakups and all the stuff that young people do, so her perspective is very fresh."
Sounds like it was personal. Regardless, the internet lost all chill when ‘Babe’ dropped with Taylor stans becoming instant detectives trying to decipher the lyrics in order to figure out just who she’s referring to in these lyrics.
Here is what we know about the track. It was initially intended to be released as part of the track list for ‘Red,’ which was Taylor’s 2012 album. On ‘Red,’ it is believed that All Too Well, Red, and even We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together could all be inspired by Taylor’s whirlwind romance with Jake Gyllenhaal. Taylor dated Jake in 2011, and he is exactly who the internet thinks ‘Babe’ is about… and they’re not happy about it.
One fan took to Twitter saying “did you notice the parallels between babe and all too well????? jake cheated on her”
Another wrote “Babe links so many Red tracks together now that we know Jake cheated on Taylor, and that was the final nail in the coffin. I’m reading all the ‘calling up’ lines from Red and imagining their phone conversations now.”
It does makes things really, well, real if Babe really is about Jake, but one fan has a completely different theory that is worthy of being noted.
Maybe Taylor kept Babe off of Red because it's not about Jake and she was sparing Jake from all of the hate he might get from everybody thinking he cheated on her.
Truthfully, if we’re all totally wrong, and the song is written completely uninspired by a personal past experience, it’s way more fun to solve another Tay Swift lyric mystery, and I’m sure we can all agree on that. Who do you think Babe is about? Drop your theories down below. Thanks so much for checkin in to Clevver, I’m Sinead de Vries, hit that subscribe button and I’ll see you guys next time.
