That’s right, Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, announcing that Tillerson will be replaced by CIA Chief Mike Pompeo. And just a few hours after Trump’s tweet, it was reported that Tillerson most likely learned about his firing as the Secretary of State via Twitter.
Which basically means Twitter is Trump’s version of an HR department.
Everyone was taken aback at this news, including Trump’s biggest supporters: Fox News. Fox News pretty much blasted the President’s decision to fire Tillerson over Twitter on their front page, calling the move QUOTE, “undiplomatic” and “unceremonious”.
Trump didn’t even tag Tillerson in the Tweet, so yeah--I’d call that “unceremonious” alright.
According to The New York Times, Tillerson had gotten a warning of what was to come the previous Friday from Trump’s Chief of Staff, John F. Kelly. Kelly reportedly called Tillerson to tell him to cut his trip to Africa short, and told him QUOTE, “You may get a tweet”.
And we thought getting dumped over text was bad...
Trump spoke with reporters after making the announcement, saying QUOTE, “I actually got along well with Rex but really it was a different mind-set, a different thinking...When you look at the Iran deal, I think it’s terrible. I guess he thought it was OK...So we were not really thinking the same. With Mike, Mike Pompeo, we have a very similar thought process. I think it’s going to go very well.”
But that’s not what other insiders are saying. According to the Washington Post, The President and Tillerson constantly clashed, including in Trump’s decision to agree to a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un without consulting Tillerson.
A statement read on behalf of Tillerson read in part QUOTE, “The secretary had every intention of staying because of the critical progress made in national security and other areas. He will miss his colleagues greatly at the Department of State, and the foreign ministers he’s worked with throughout the world. The secretary did not speak to the president, and is unaware of the reason. He is grateful for the opportunity to serve, and believes strongly that public service is a noble calling.”
Translation: I can’t believe you broke up with me over text, but I’m going to be strong and move on and date someone just like you, but better.
