The future of the galaxy far, far away seems to lie in the hands of Rey, the current jedi-in-training, but leave it to the franchise’s most dedicated fan base to decipher each and every clue from the trailer, released just last month, leading up to one of the biggest questions of whether or not Rey will join Kylo Ren on the dark side.
The trailer wastes little time in hiding the fact that Rey is struggling to resist the force, where we see her training under the watchful eye of Luke Skywalker, to which a terrified Luke reveals, “I’ve seen this raw strength only once before,” and that it didn’t scare him then, but it does now, of course referring to Kylo Ren, who previously trained under Luke and ultimately betrayed him. But in another scene of the trailer we hear Supreme Leader Snoke speak these chilling words, allegedly to Kylo Ren:
Now is it just me, or are the parallels of both Kylo and Rey clearly evident in this trailer with both Snoke and Luke using similar verbiage to describe their powers? Rey can be heard admitting that she feels the seductive pull of the dark side, saying that she sees QUOTE, “light, darkness, and something else” and that “It’s calling me.”
Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker, and has played Luke since the first film was released back in 1977, opened up to EW and gave a little bit of insight into the repercussions Luke is feeling after being betrayed by his own nephew. He said QUOTE, “Luke made a huge mistake in thinking that his nephew was the chosen one, so he invested everything he had in Kylo, much like Obi-Wan did with my character. And he is betrayed, with tragic consequences. Luke feels responsible for that. It’s that guilt, that feeling that it’s his fault, that he didn’t detect the darkness in him until it was too late.”
Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, also opened up to the publication, saying QUOTE, “She doesn’t really know what she wants. She really is trying to do the right thing and morally, her compass is really pointing north.”
But it was Rey’s closing sentence in all of this that have fans REALLY thinking that the dark side may be adding one new member to its fleet come December. We already know Rey’s character stems from her own abandonment issues after her parents left her on the junkyard planet of Jaaku as a child, and in the trailer, she is still struggling with finding her place, as she can be heard saying, “I need someone to show me my place in all this,” to which a hand is extended out by none other than Kylo Ren. Yeah, MAJOR CHILLS.
However, one opposing fan theory that has fans latching onto any last hope of Rey resisting the dark side force states that although Luke is technically “The Last Jedi”, as stated in the opening credits of The Force Awakens, and that he will die in the upcoming film, making Rey the TRUE last Jedi, in which she doesn’t turn to the dark side after all. One can only hope, but we’re just gonna have to wait a few more short weeks to find out, so be sure to grab a ticket to The Last Jedi, in theaters December 15th, and let me know all YOUR theories on which side Rey will eventually land on, so get to talking down here in the comments, and as always, don’t forget to subscribe.
