This year’s BBMAs showcased flawless performances, heartfelt speeches, AND some surprisingly emotional moments.
Host of the evening Kelly Clarkson introduced the show with a powerful message honoring the victims of the recent Texas school shooting. While the producers of the show wanted her to hold a moment of silence, Kelly opted to hold a moment of ACTION. She fought back tears while encouraging everyone watching the show to do something about the issue of gun violence in their communities. It was the first of many incredibly moving moments throughout the show.
After the break, Kelly took to the stage to open the show by performing an impressive and delightful medley of songs by all of the show’s nominated artists, from Kendrick Lamar to Taylor Swift. And since the award show took place at the MGM in Las Vegas, Kelly had a variety of Vegas show performers in lieu of regular backup dancers for the super fun set.
Another highlight of the show we did NOT see coming was Taylor Swift’s attendance! Not only was Taylor present at the show, she also took home 2 awards throughout the night -- one for Top Female Artist, and the other for Top Selling Album for Reputation. Considering Taylor has completely opted out of awards shows for a couple years now, it was inspiring to see her reclaim her rightful place amongst her peers.
Another moment we absolutely loved was when Normani did an INCREDIBLY sexy dance break during her performance with Khalid for “Love Lies”.
HELLO, SOLO ARTIST NORMANI! Can’t wait to see more of that!
Another moment that was instantly iconic, was when Christina Aguilera and Demi Lovato took turns doing what we can only call a straight-up BELT-OFF during “Fall in Line”.
We are not worthy!
Jennifer Lopez also gave an unforgettable performance with her stage debut of her latest single, “Dinero”. I would explain how incredible and flawless she was, but let’s be real this is J-Lo we’re talking about so that should just be a given.
One of the most powerful moments from the show came when the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School choir joined Khalid and Shawn Mendes on stage for their “Youth” performance.
There’s no way there was a dry eye in the house after that one.
Janet Jackson was presented with the Icon Award at the show, and in addition to blowing everyone away with her medley performance, she gave a beautiful speech inspired by the Me Too movement.
Janet, we don’t deserve you, but we need you.
K-Pop group BTS gave one of the most unforgettable performances of ALL TIME, thanks to their unbelievable choreography for their premiere of “Fake Love”. This is not your mama’s boy band.
How do you even follow up an act like that? Well, if you’re Salt-n-Pepa, you give an insanely fun performance of your greatest hits to close out the show. The ladies had everyone in the audience and at home dancing and singing along to every iconic track, from “Shoop” to “Push it” to “Whatta Man”.
Now THAT’S how you finish an awards show. And also make everyone wish it was the 90s again.
