When asked about how much they’ve shot, Dylan said that they are QUOTE “deep in the thick of it” and “about halfway through” shooting the second season. Katherine gushed about how excited she was to be back working with the people she loved, and how thrilled she is to keep the conversation going that they started in season 1.
To catch you all up (not that you need it), the show was surrounded by controversy since it started streaming back in March because of its graphic depiction of teen suicide. Netflix gave the show a TV-MA rating, meaning it’s intended for mature audiences only, and ran warnings before episodes that contained particularly graphic content. Netflix also launched the website 13ReasonsWhy.info the day of the show’s debut, which included information about the National Suicide Prevention Hotline (1800-273-TALK) and confirmed that they consulted with several mental health professionals and doctors who helped shape the way the story covered suicide, sexual assault, and bullying. But experts argue that that wasn’t enough, and have urged the show’s producers to make adjustments in the next season to account for the significant impact it may have on viewers.
When asked if the writers and producers were incorporating these notes from the mental health community and the fandom at large, Dylan responded QUOTE"I think every single word from everyone across the world has been heard by everyone involved with the show. Whether that will have an impact or change the storytelling that needs to be done in season two, I don't think so. I think they're, again, going to tell the story that we think needs to be told.”
Both actors stressed that they were amazed by the overwhelming response that the show received, and the sentiment was echoed by the series executive producer, Selena Gomez.
She explained QUOTE: “I didn't think it would even remotely blow up the way that it did, both positively and, obviously, controversially. So, in season two, we answer a lot of the questions that were brought up, and I think if our show is able to start a conversation at the dinner table -- even if it’s just, 'That’s terrible' or 'That was great' -- it’s still starting a conversation. It scared people, but it’s really important."
