Trying to keep it together while accepting an award is already hard enough as it is, but these 2016 Oscar winners were able to keep their cool and deliver some of the best speeches of the night.
It was a big night for everyone who was nominated for an Oscar, but it was an even bigger night for those who won a shiny Academy Award. As you all know, wins and acceptance speeches go hand-in-hand and while there were a TON of great ones from the Oscars this year, here are 5 incredible thank you speeches that made our list.
First on all our list is Leonardo DiCaprio – I’m sure you all saw that one coming. Leo finally won his first Oscar after being nominated SIX times and I have to say he gave the best speech of the night. Not only did he follow the usual list of thanking family, friends, and everyone who made it all possible, the actor also called attention to climate control during his speech and asked everyone to start working together to protect the Earth for the sake of humanity.
And before ending his speech, Leo took one last moment to drop this little comment.
It was a pretty long speech, but the Academy knew better than to cut the man off. He’s been waiting for this moment FOR-EVER.
Next up on our list is Brie Larson. The actress could not say thank you enough to those who worked on the film and everyone who supported it, but the cutest part of her speech has to be when she thanked her on-screen partner-in-crime, Jacob Tremblay.
There were SO many first-time winners in the room at the Oscars tonight, Leo, Brie, Alicia Vikander, and Sam Smith, to name a few. Speaking of Sam, when he went up on stage to accept his award for ‘Writing’s On the Wall,’ the singer mentioned in his speech that Ian McKellen once said no openly gay man has ever won an Oscar. So Sam went on to say that regardless of whether or not that is true, he’s dedicating his award to the LGBT community around the world.
Ever since the 88th Academy Awards revealed its list of nominees, it has been called out by many for being so white and to no one’s surprise, Chris Rock made it his mission to point that out at various times throughout the show.
With that being said, when Director Alejandro G. Inarritu accepted his award for best director for the second year in a row, he decided to end his speech by calling for equality in the industry. The director said in his acceptance speech that he is “very lucky to be here tonight, but unfortunately, many others haven’t had the same luck. There is a line in the film that Glass says to his mixed-race son, ‘They don’t listen to you, they just see the color of your skin.’ So what a great opportunity to our generation to really liberate ourselves from all prejudice and, you know, this tribal thinking, and make sure for once and forever that the color of the skin become as irrelevant as the length of our hair.”
I don’t know about you, but I applaud Alejandro for continuing the conversation on the issue and for making his point even though the producers were trying to play him off because his time was up.
And last but not least, the directors of “Inside Out” picked up an Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film and gave a great piece of advice for all of the kids who are growing up and dealing with their changing emotions.
So, that pretty much concludes out list of the best winning speeches of the night. Who gave your favorite acceptance speech of the night? Let me know in the comment section below!
