Disney gave us our first look at Agrabah, Lago and Aladdin in this teaser trailer released Thursday! Disney fans took to twitter to express their feelings with one fan tweeting:
“I have happy tears watching this. Oh childhood memories!”
While others were bummed to have not seen more footage but don’t worry guys, this is JUST a teaser trailer. One of the main characters people WERE excited to see was the Genie and they’re certainly not the only ones.
Will Smith shared the first poster we’ve seen of the live-action Aladdin film on his IG and captioned it: “LEMME OUT!! Can’t wait for y’all to see Me BLUE!” Will Smith will be playing the Genie who was previously voiced by the late Robin Williams.
Mena Massoud, who we DID get a peek of, will be playing Aladdin. Naomi Scott will be Jasmine and Marwan Kenzari as Jafar.
The live action version has a lot to live up to. According to Deadline, the animated version of Aladdin was the highest-grossing film of 1992, and became the first animated film to reach the half-billion mark. It won two Academy Awards and its soundtrack won a Grammy for Song of the Year.
As if that wasn’t enough, the animated VHS release set a sales record by grossing $500 million in the US. Since then, Aladdin has spawned two direct-to-video sequels, an animated TV series, and a Broadway adaptation.
So yeah, it’s a pretty big deal and we’re pumped for this live-action film! Aladdin, directed by Guy Ritchie, comes out on May 24, 2019.
