Get ready for an epic live action of Aladdin because Will Smith is rumored to be playing the genie!
From the Prince of Bel Air to granting Prince Ali three wishes, Will Smith may be coming out of the lamp.
Will Smith may be bouncing from one live action to the other. He previously dropped out of Dumbo and is now rumored to be the number one choice to play the genie in the Aladdin live action. The Genie of course was made famous by Robin Williams in the 1992 animated film so Will would definitely have a lot of expectations to live up to but let’s be real, it’s Will Smith, he can handle it. The original was a booming success raking in over $504 million at the box office along with the film’s theme song “A While New World” earning the film two Oscars for Best Score and Best Song. Guy Ritchie is onboard to direct while John August will serve as the film’s writer. The last time Will lent his voice to a live action was for Shark Tale in 2004 which was my jam back in the day so there’s no doubt in my mind that he can tackle an animated classic turned live action. Gabriel Iglesias joked that if Will doesn’t want to play the genie, he’s more than happy to take his place. Gabriel tweeted – “@FluffyGuy agrees to play "Genie" in the new Aladdin Movie if Will Smith turns it down. Make a call @Disney #Fluffy.” The film’s producer Dan Lin spoke to Collider about his vision for casting saying QUOTE - "When I came in to make the movie, I wanted to make a diverse version of the movie. "Luckily for me Guy Ritchie has the same vision and Disney has the same vision, so we're not here to make Prince of Persia. We want to make a movie that's authentic to that world."
Twitter definitely had a thing or two to say about the possibility of Will playing the genie. One fan tweeted – “Taking over from Robin Williams is almost an impossible task, but I think Will Smith as Genie in the Aladdin movie could work. I like it.”
Another fan wasn’t as accepting of the change tweeting – “I like Will Smith but as far as I'm concerned, you can't make an Aladdin film without Robin Williams playing the genie.”
