OBVIOUSLY this whole ‘Selena’s new song is totally about Justin’ theory nothing new for anyone who has been following this whole Jelena saga for years now. So, it’s really no surprise that fans have been dissecting the lyrics to Sel’s new song ‘Back to You’ for any and all references to her on-again off-again relationship with Justin only to find out that the song is like, basically 99 percent about the Biebs.
Before we dive right on in to the lyrics, Selena actually premiered the new song on Beats 1 Radio and told host Zane Lowe that the song is super personal and that it wasn’t written with the show in mind – no duh. Selena said QUOTE, “With this song, it’s a very special record. I want it to be a beautiful message in a really complicated way but really fun. But I think ‘Back to You’ was more of my special project that I wanted to give to season 2.”
While we kinda sorta know Selena’s personal connection to this song, I guess we’ll just have to wait and watch season 2 before we can really understand how “Back to You” fits in with the show.
Anyway, now that that’s over and done with, let’s talk about the lyrics, shall we? Immediately in the first verse of the song we all pretty much get a hint of how Selena feels about Justin.
Every Jelena fan knows that these last eight years have been rough for Sel and JB. They were constantly on and off and even though Jelena pretty much ended things “for good” in 2012, Sel tried to let the next few years “water down how she ultimately feels about Justin” but that obviously didn’t help.
The media would later go on to report that Justin and Selena would talk here and there before ultimately getting back together in late 2017 – which ties back into her every time we talk lyrics.
In the chorus of the song the line, “I wanna hold you when I’m not supposed to/ When I’m laying close to someone else” is DEFINITELY a nod to how Justin is constantly on her mind, even when she’s dating someone else.
It was rumored that Justin and Selena reconnected while she was still dating The Weeknd, but what I think really solidifies this theory even more is when Charlie Puth basically insinuated to Billboard that his brief relationship with Selena ended because of Justin.
Charlie told Billboard QUOTE, “I’m trying to put this the best way possible: It wasn’t like I was the only person on her mind. And I think I knew that going in – what I was getting myself into.” I don’t know about you but that quote is pretty telling.
There’s also this part of the chorus where Sel sings, “I know I said I wasn’t sure/ But I go back to you/ I know I’d go back to you.” This line could’ve been referring to the time in 2015 when she told ELLE that she didn’t know if she’d go back to Justin or if reconciling with him was even a good idea.
And then there’s this verse where she asks ‘what’s the point of hiding?’ could very much reference their brief, renewed romance last year when Selena and Justin basically went public with their relationship by kissing at the ice rink where Justin plays hockey at.
Because, well, what is the point of hiding if we’re all gonna find out anyway!
And then there was the vertical video that Sel uploaded on Spotify that features a small glimpse of a Justin Bieber lookalike???? Or at least that’s what fans are saying! What do you think?
So, that’s pretty much all of the references we could find. But what do you guys think? Is “Back To You” TOTALLY about the Biebs or do you think it was written with 13 Reasons Why’s season 2 in mind?
