We’re decoding The Weeknd’s surprising new album lyrics, and it sounds like Selena Gomez might have really broken his heart...
But while SelGo may have broken his heart, it might have always belonged to Bella Hadid the whole time…
Last night at midnight, The Weeknd surprised fans by dropping a new six-track album, called “My Dear Melancholy”. A number of the tracks seem to reference his breakups with exes Selena Gomez and Bella Hadid, so of course we’re OBSESSED with breaking down the tunes lyric by lyric to try and figure out what went down in these relationships and breakups --from Abel’s perspective.
The track "Call Out My Name" seems to be about his relationship with Selena Gomez, and according to the lyrics, she really broke his heart.
He starts off singing QUOTE, "We found each other/ I helped you out of a broken place/ You gave me comfort/ But falling for you was my mistake." When Selena and Abel started dating, SHE was coming out of a pretty dark period of depression because of her having Lupus, meanwhile he was still getting over his breakup with Bella Hadid.
He also sings the lyrics QUOTE, “I put you on top, I put you on top / I claimed you so proud and openly”, and we all know how OPEN he was about his PDA with SelGo--he attended the Met Gala with her, they took a trip to Europe, AND he was always posting gorgeous snaps of Selena on his Instagram, showing off his support and pride.
At one point, The Weeknd seems to make a dig at Selena getting back with Justin Bieber, singing QUOTE, “Guess I was just another pit stop / ‘Til you made up your mind”. Ouch.
But perhaps the biggest bombshell in the song is where The Weeknd suggests he might have at offered to donate HIS kidney for Selena’s kidney transplant.
As you can hear, he sings QUOTE, “I almost cut a piece of myself for your life”. Now THAT is a pretty big revelation if it’s true.
While “Call Out My Name” seems to be all about SelGo, other tracks also seem to hint at Abel’s previous relationship with Bella Hadid.
In the song “Wasted Times,” The Weeknd sings about an “equestrian”, and Bella used to ride horses and even compete in tournaments when she was younger. He sings QUOTE, “You were an equestrian, so ride it like a champion...Wasted times I spent with someone else. She wasn't even half of you.” And yes, that definitely sounds like a dig at Selena Gomez.
He also sings on that track QUOTE, “You’ve been with me from the beginnin’/ And I know right now that we’re not talkin’ / I hope you know this d*ck is still an option”. Well, that’s one way to suggest that you’re still down to hook up with your supermodel ex!
Obviously there are four more tracks and many more lyrics to decode, so if you guys need me, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing. Along with the rest of the Twitter because apparently everyone’s obsessed with getting through all the subtext to find out how Abel REALLY feels about Selena and Bella. As one fan put it QUOTE, “We gotta thank Selena Gomez for making The Weeknd go through the pain that he did that caused him to make this album lol”.
As sad as we are that Selena completely broke his heart, we gotta say--it lead to some pretty damn smooth tracks, so I guess thank you Selena and Bella?
