The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin has passed away at the age of 76 from advanced pancreatic cancer.
It is a sad day because we have lost a legend, an icon, and undoubtedly one of the best singers of all time. Known for hits like “Respect” and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” Aretha’s career was incredible, leaving behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.
She suffered from pancreatic cancer for awhile and passed away this morning in her Detroit home where she was under hospice care. A source revealed that she was down to 86 pounds at the time of her passing. However thankfully she was surrounded by friends and family by her side. Her family released a statement saying QUOTE - "In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds.” She is survived by her four sons.
Where to even start when it comes to her fantastic career. She started as a powerhouse gospel singer before she landed her first record deal in the early 1960s. She held the record for the most entries on the Hot 100 list of any female artist for nearly 40 years. She won 18 Grammys and was the first woman ever to be inducted into in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Her list of accolades is miles long, leaving behind a lifetime worth of hits - “Chain of Fools,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “Think” and so many more. Her hits not only became part of the soundtracks of so many lives, they were also anthems for the civil rights and feminist movements, reminding everyone to have some R-E-S-P-E-C-T. She performed at the inaugurations of three different presidents, most recently at President Obama’s in 2009 when she wore that iconic hat while belting out a soulful rendition of “My Country Tis of Thee.” She was also granted the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former president Bush in 2005.
In a statement released by the Recording Academy Thursday morning, they spoke highly of the late singer saying QUOTE - "Aretha Franklin was an incomparable artist who came to be recognized as one of the most profound voices in music. Her distinctive sound, unforgettable recordings, and giving spirit will continue to be celebrated worldwide. Aretha will be dearly missed, and our thoughts go out to her loved ones during this difficult time."
Aretha Franklin will certainly be missed and her legacy will live on forever. Thanks for watching Clevver News, I’m your host Drew Dorsey and I’ll see you next time.
