Not cool, Cam, not cool.
It all started with a question from a female reporter. During a press conference on Wednesday, Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked Cam a question regarding running routes in the game. If you watch closely during the video, Cam starts to smile as soon as Jourdan said the word ‘routes,’ which led him to make a pretty sexist comment before answering the question.
Not long after the Q&A, Jourdan took to her Twitter to write QUOTE, “I don’t think it’s “funny” to be a female and talk about routes. I think it’s my job.”
As the controversial remarks started spreading, Steve Drummond, the Carolina Panthers Director of Communications released a statement to ESPN stating that Cam and Jourdan talked after the conference where he QUOTE “expressed regret for using those words.”
HOWEVER, Jourdan told ESPN her side of the story and said that Cam did not apologize at all or seem remorseful for his words. The reporter said QUOTE, “This afternoon, I did my job as an NFL beat writer and asked Cam Newton a question about one of his receivers. I was dismayed by his response, which not only belittled me but countless other women before me and beside me who work in similar jobs. I sought Mr. Newton out as he left the locker room a few minutes later. He did not apologize for his comments.”
On top of all the backlash Cam has been receiving for his comments, it was been announced that Dannon Yogurt has fired Cam as a sponsor for their Oikos Greek Yogurt brand.
In a statement, the company wrote QUOTE, “We are shocked and disheartened at the behavior and comments of Cam Newton towards Jourdan Rodrigue, which we perceive as sexist and disparaging to all women. It is entirely inconsistent with our commitment to fostering equality and inclusion in every workplace. It is simply not OK to belittle anyone based on gender. We have shared our concerts with Cam and will no longer work with him.”
Do you guys think Cam will respond and apologize publicly since he’s receiving so much backlash? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below.
