It’s no secret that that there are way more than 13 reasons why the series in controversial, but many people have focused on Clay’s irresponsible response to Tyler showing up to the school dance with a gun. For the first time, Dylan is opening up about his perspective on his character’s actions, and what he hopes the storyline will achieve. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dylan said QUOTE ”it’s not really about empathizing with Tyler, but recognizing that there are many different ways that a monster can be formed or what can bring a monster out of someone. The way that I view this season overall -- like involving weapons and everything -- is how dangerous it can be when kids who are so destructive and so emotionally confused can easily access weapons like this … weapons of mass destruction, like assault rifles.”
Dylan also brought up that he thinks Clay made the wrong decision in intervening in this highly volatile situation. IN the same interview, he said QUOTE “They should have locked the doors inside and called the police and let everyone know what was happening. I think we are not supposed to believe that Clay made the right decision.” The series lead said that Clay is someone who acts impulsively on his emotions, and feel as though it is his responsibility to go in and save the day. He added QUOTE “I don’t really think Clay knew what he was getting into -- I don’t think he fully realized in that moment that he'd be facing Tyler with an assault rifle.”
The 21-year old musician and actor also delved into how he managed to get into the headspace to make such an unruly decision. He said QUOTE It's a tricky scene because me, as Dylan, I’m going, ‘This is a horrible decision. What is Clay doing? But then [I] also have to really believe what [I’m] doing in playing Clay in that scene and get to a place of believing what I’m doing is right.”
He then added, “As long as people know that that is not the right decision -- nobody should ever try and confront anyone who’s carrying a weapon.” We’re glad he brought that up. He also brought up how disturbing he found the finale’s shocking bathroom scene when he first read the script, and how it took convincing from the series show runner, Brian Yorkey that it was necessary. Ultimately though, he thinks it’s an important scene and was QUOTE “shot very tastefully”.
