Ed Sheeran opens up on The Jonathan Ross Show about his struggle with substance abuse.
We’re learning a lot more about Ed Sheeran. Guess he’s just thinking out loud.
Ed Sheeran is not an artist who’s afraid to express how he feels or what he’s gone through. And now according to People Magazine he is revealing that he’s struggled with substance abuse. On the upcoming episode of The Jonathan Ross Show which airs this Saturday, Ed details how difficult it is to become a household name so fast and gives us the real reason he took off a year from social media. He says, "I think you need to, when you get into the industry, adjust to [fame], and I didn't adjust because I was constantly working on tour. And all the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse. I never touched anything. I started slipping into it, and that's why I took a year off and buggered off." He also goes on to talk about what led to his time off and when he knew it was becoming a problem saying, “I focused on work, and I can’t work under the influence, I can’t write songs under the influence, I can’t perform under the influence — so the more I worked the less [that happened].
I’ve worked my whole life to get to where I am and you can’t lose that over something that you do in your spare time. I didn’t really notice it was happening. It just started gradually happening, and then some people took me to one side and were like, ‘Calm yourself down’ … It’s all fun to begin with, it all starts off as a party and then you’re doing it on your own and it’s not, so that was a wake-up call and taking a year off.” We all remember when Ed famously announced after his tour in 2015 that he would be taking a hiatus from social media and taking some time for himself. At the time he said was taking a break to travel the world and see everything that he missed.
Now we see that there was more to the story. Ed opened up recently to Rolling Stone Magazine back in March about his excessive drinking, but has since slowed down a bit. One thing that’s helped with that is his girlfriend Cherry Seaborn. He admits that them living together now really helped to ground him and balance him out. Ed is currently injured due to a bike accident that has forced him to cancel some of his tour dates in Asia, so he will have some more time to himself to reflect and heal. For those of us in North America though, he did just announce that tickets for his North American tour in 2018 are on sale now. So, if any of you want to buy me a ticket, send me a DM on Instagram @emileennisjr so I can tell you where to send it. Anyway, we will have to wait and see what else he reveals on The Jonathan Ross Show, but in the meantime, what do you think about Ed opening up about all this?
