Ed Sheeran has no problem getting completely honest about his biggest motivations and ultimate career goals in the new issue of GQ.
Ed is rocking the March cover of GQ magazine, and when the mag asked him about what he wants out of his career as a singer/songwriter, he made it clear that he has his eye on the #1 prize. He told the mag QUOTE, "There are a lot of singer-songwriters around now. I'm not the first but there are more than before. I'm very happy for everyone to be in the same race as me, even if they copy every single thing I've done. In a 100m sprint to get a No1 album I just know I'm going to win. I don't care who's doing what. I just know I'm going to win. I'm going to make sure I come first."
Woah, those are some seriously confident fighting words! And it’s pretty awesome how unapologetic he is about it. But as much as Ed is competitive against all of his pop peers, he admits that the one artist who’s become his true motivation to sell more records is Adele, simply because she’s the only other artist who’s sold more than him. He told GQ QUOTE, “Adele is the one person who's sold more records than me in the past ten years. She's the only person I need to sell more records than. That's a big f--king feat because her last album sold 20 million. But if I don't set her as the benchmark then I'm selling myself short.” I mean, we should all set Adele as THE benchmark for everything, so we can’t argue with him there.
Ed also explained that as much as he’s in competition with Adele over album sales, he doesn’t feel any rivalry with her or any other artist creatively. He explained QUOTE, "I'm not in competition [creatively] because we all sit in our own lanes, but once the creative product is out there is a race to the finish line."
Ed also spoke to the magazine about his and good friend Taylor Swift’s secret to becoming global superstars, admitting QUOTE, “There's an underdog element to it...Taylor was never the popular kid in school. I was never the popular kid in school. Then you get to the point when you become the most popular kid in school—and we both take it a bit too far.” Okay Ed is officially one of the most honest pop stars in the world.
He also shared just how ambitious he and Taylor really are, saying QUOTE, “She wants to be the biggest female artist in the world and I want to be the biggest male artist in the world. It also comes from always being told that you can't do something and being like, 'F--k you. I can.'” Well that motivation seems to be working out pretty well for him.
