Nothing says “Throwback Thursday” like fishnets, fur coats and female domination, so get ready to live out your ‘90s nostalgia dream.
So if the ‘90s were a prehistoric time to you, AKA you don’t remember because you were actually a fetus, Ally, Normani, Lauren and Dinah Jane of Fifth Harmony have given us a glimpse back into the land of miniskirts, oversized denim and strappy heels, to a time when girl groups ruled the planet – and it’s all thanks to their first-ever cover spread in Galore Magazine since downsizing to four.
In the mag, the girls open up about their new music, the group’s new dynamic and leaving quite the legacy. Dinah broke down the group’s plan on testing out new sounds saying QUOTE, “We’ve been creating sounds that we’ve been wanting to touch base on. Some R&B tones, some rhythmic tones. It’s been amazing to create with one another because we’re so different when it comes to music. So to vibe together and create this Fifth Harmony sound is what makes it so special.”
Having past girl groups to look up to has helped paved the way for Fifth Harmony musically, as Normani added, “It’s important to have strong individuals (like Spice Girls, Supremes, TLC) to paint the way for us. Without them doing what they did for music, and being our introduction, we probably wouldn’t even be!” Lauren also touched on that topic saying that she feels their group has already left a legacy on future generations, as far as girl groups in the industry go.
The girls also admit that they strive on living by female empowerment, saying that the key to a successful healthy relationship with each other is communication and constantly lifting each other up. Ally said QUOTE, “The four of us are really in sync with each other. We’re pretty open about most things. For us, communication is really important.” She also revealed that they each enjoy a lot of the same things as one another, like eating frozen yogurt, going to the movies, talking about boys and exchanging music.
But being constantly surrounded by a group of girls can sometimes take a toll on one’s confidence, however Lauren talked about the importance of empowering one another, saying, “Especially being around other girls, it’s really easy to start picking yourself apart and being like, ‘Wow, she looks better than me,’ or, ‘My hair doesn’t look as good as hers.’ It’s like, wait. Why not just say, ‘You look dope, you look hot, I love your outfit.’ Giving each other that energy changes the whole vibe of whatever we’re doing.”
Although the girls do get scrutinized and criticized for the things they wear, they try not to let it take away from how they feel about themselves. Normani touched on double standards, saying QUOTE, “That’s happened to us throughout our whole career. When it came to performances, people would judge us on our performance outfits. They would say things like, ‘Look at the hoe squad.’ There were all these memes.”
Harsh judgements aside, Fifth Harmony seem to be stronger than ever before, and I’ve got a feeling this is just the beginning! So while we wait for all these girls have in store for us, I want to know all your thoughts about their Galore Magazine interview, so get to talking right down here in the comments, and as always, be sure to subscribe for all the latest updates.
