Fifth Harmony are getting all sorts of candid on the cover of Latina Magazine as they break down body shamers, women empowerment and making it big.
But first I have to give a HUGE shoutout to Normani Hamilton and Dinah Jane Hansen, who are the first EVER non-Latina women to grace the cover of Latina Mag, so way to kill it ladies!
During their interview, the fabulous quintet each opened up about their hardships and what lead them to where they are now. In one of Dinah Jane’s most revealing interviews yet, she first recalled her time on The X Factor where she experienced multiple body-shaming comments saying things like, “Oh my gosh! Why is she so fat?” She said, QUOTE, “I would always compare myself, like, ‘Why can’t I be that small?’ I’m just naturally built this way. I overcame it. When you embrace your flaws, everyone starts embracing you.”
Dinah also recalls meeting a fan during a meet-and-greet who had cuts on her wrist, to which Dinah told her, “No more.” She revealed, “The Next thing I know, she got a tattoo with ‘No more’ across her scars. She saw me again and told me that I inspired her to never do it again. Our fans are so attracted to us because they make us feel it’s okay to be imperfect. I’m very grateful for that.”
Lauren Jauregui opened up about her late grandmother and how she taught her to be assertive and independent, saying, “We’re very strong, independent, goal-orientated women. I wasn’t born into a family that told me that I wasn’t capable of what my brother was capable of. I can do anything.”
And if anyone was at all wondering about the battle of the girl bands, Lauren also revealed that there is only love between Fifth Harmony and fellow girl band Little Mix, saying that pitting women against each other is just a game for the media. She also said, “We’re all women trying to do our thing. We’re spreading a positive message of girl empowerment, love, and self-love. And there’s plenty of room for us.”
Normani also opened up about women empowerment, saying “I’m part of the feminist movement, but I also feel that at times women aren’t supporting one another. Yes, we stand for equality and want to feel equal just as men are, but women need to figure out our relationships and support one another.”
Camila also talked about each of her bandmates respecting one another, but also revealed some shocking news. When asked if she thought the band would eventually break up, she said, “Honestly, I think we all do. We’d be lying if we all said this is a picture-perfect thing, like we all completely agreed on the album track list and what the sound and the music-video treatment would be like. But for manufactured bands, it’s harder. The cool part is that we allow one another to do our own thing within this thing. I think it’s healthy because if not, personally, I would go insane.”
But don’t worry Harmonizers, this is NOT a means to freak out, because Fifth Harmony still have a long road ahead of them, and will continue to spread self-love, empowerment and of course chart-topping hits for years to come.
