Soooo you may want to take a seat for this one because Ariel has a few words to say.
After years of falling victim to body-shaming and slut-shaming comments regarding the type of clothing Ariel Winter has been photographed in, the Modern Family star has officially had enough. Well, I’m gonna go out on a limb and say she had enough the first time around, but here we are… once again.
Ariel received harsh criticism for her gown she wore to last weekend’s Emmy Awards, but after countless tweets and comments about what she chooses to wear, say, getting gas or running errands, she posted a “rant”, as she called it, to her social medias.
She started out by saying QUOTE, “Something I wish people would realize… I am NOT trying to be featured on Snapchat, I am not trying to be pap'd everywhere I go, I am literally just LIVING and unfortunately, I can't do that without paparazzi following me around everyday. I'm not trying to show you my ass in shorts when I go to the grocery store. I'm trying to live my life. People wear shorts. People have wardrobe malfunctions. No one is perfect.”
Ariel then goes on to say that she is NOT a stylist, and doesn’t really know what to wear every day so that she looks ‘appropriate’ or ‘fashionable’. But on that note, she goes on to ask who she’s trying to be appropriate for, saying, “Also, screw having to always look appropriate or fashionable. For what? Society? Who gets to decide what is appropriate or fashionable???? I wear what I like and no one should fault me for that.”
She then went onto say that she doesn’t want to see herself in shorts putting water in her car just as much as we don’t, and that she’d much rather be in the news when she asks for it, by going to a publicized event, or when she has a specific work project coming out! Makes total sense, BUT clearly she was just getting started. Not only has she received hateful comments for her physical appearance, but for her interview with The Hollywood Reporter, when she admitted that her mother, whom she was legally emancipated from back in 2015, sexualized her as a child. She said QUOTE, “I'd also like to address the tweets I get saying ‘you accused your mother of sexualizing you yet you're a whore.' I was a CHILD being dressed like I was 24. I was 8-13 years old. I wasn't an ADULT as I am now. As a child, you do what you're told regardless of what is good for you.”
She finished her letter by reminding us all that she is an ADULT now, who can make her own choices and have her own identity, and that just because she dresses a certain way doesn’t mean she is unintelligent or has no respect for herself. The moral of the story here? In Ariel’s words, “Do whatever you want, people, just strive to please YOURSELF and NO ONE else.”
Well I couldn’t have said that better myself, and let’s just hope this quiets down the Internet trolls once and for all. But right now, I want to here all your thoughts on Ariel’s letter – do you agree with her, or do you see a different side of the matter? Let me know in the comments, and after that, click right over here to see why Ariana Grande fired one of her dancers this week.
