On the 11th of January 2017, the Court of Appeal overturned a judgement and ordered Malaysiakini to pay two hundred thousand ringgit in damages to the Raub Australian Gold Mine.
This decision can set a dangerous precedent for journalists, and not just those who work for Malaysiakini but all across the country as well.
The case was brought against Malaysiakini over reports and videos published alleging that the use of cyanide-related chemicals in the mine had adversely affected residents in a nearby village - an allegation that RAGM deemed defamatory and thus sued us for.
