China's provinces and regions are celebrating the Spring Festival with various activities featuring local color.

In central China’s Henan Province, folk artists put on a splendid show of molten iron fireworks for Spring Festival.

A 500-year-old traditional performance, Datiehua, meaning “creating iron sparks”, is classified as intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.

To create the stunning visual display of Datiehua on Thursday, Lunar New Year’s Eve, artists in Kaifeng of central China's Henan Province threw molten iron, heated up to 1,600 degrees Celsius against a cold wall, creating showers of sparks.

Meanwhile, a special fireworks display was held in Xiamen of east China's Fujian Province and the city across the strait, Jinmen, on Friday.

Over 68,000 low-sulfur fireworks were lit in the 30-minute long show.

Since 1987, the annual fireworks show has been an important event for the residents across the strait to express their best wishes for each other during the Spring Festival celebrations.

Due to COVID-19 preventative measures, this year more than 13,000 Taiwan residents have stayed in Xiamen City during the Spring Festival holiday.
