American Horror Story RETURNS to Murder House & Welcomes back Jessica Lange!
Talk about season 1 nostalgia!
Jessica Lange’s highly-anticipated return to ‘American Horror Story’ finally happened last night, and it could not have been a more welcome treat for fans of the show. Jessica reprised her ‘Murder House’ role as Constance Langdon, the glamorous albeit creepy and mysterious neighbor of the Harmon family.
And speaking of Constance and the Harmons, all of the key characters from Murder House also made appearances during the episode. Ben Harmon, Vivien Harmon, and Violet Harmon all returned for the episode, as well as Billie Dean Howard, Tate Langdon, Elizabeth Short, and a few others.
The episode kicked things off with Madison and Chablis hilariously posing as a married couple who buy the Murder House. The moment they enter the pair is overwhelmed by the dark energy of the spirits residing in the house, and thanks to all the tension and jump scares Murder House brought back, this was one of the scariest episodes of ‘Apocalypse’ so far.
Later in the episode, Madison and Chablis help Constance by banishing Moira from the house, allowing her to be free and reunite with her mother. In exchange, Constance finally gives some backstory on Michael Langdon, AKA: the Antichrist and central villain of ‘Apocalypse.’ Michael is the offspring of Tate and Vivienne, and we all remember how that horrific conception went down in season 1. Constance revealed that she brought up Michael as her own child, hoping that he would be her chance at a do-over at parenting after how poorly things turned out with her other four kids. But unfortunately, she could not have been more wrong.
Constance explained that Michael was evil from the very beginning, killing small animals as a child, and then his babysitter when he got a little older. She also revealed that she realized her son wasn’t just a regular ol’ sociopath after he aged a decade overnight. She tried to bring in a priest to rid him of his evil, but Michael killed that guy, too. So, feeling as though there was no hope, Constance finally decided to commit suicide inside the Murder House, where she could be with her 3 children in ghost-form forever.
But wait, there’s more! After Constance took her own life, Ben Harmon took over raising Michael. Ben explained to Madison and Chablis that despite his many efforts, Michael was beyond his help. And just as he finished telling them this, Ben’s ex-wife Vivien Harmon made her grand return to Murder House, and told the witches that Michael is, in fact, the Antichrist. Vivienne also revealed that she believes that neither Ben NOR Tate is the father of Michael. Instead, she believes she was impregnated by the darkness of the house. At least that’s a better outcome for Violet-Tate shippers!
Lots of other Michael details were relieved, like how he ate the heart of a young girl during a ceremony officiated by the Pope of the Church of Satan, and how Miriam is one of the followers of said church.
And as dark as the episode was, it actually produced a few surprisingly happy endings for the beloved Murder House characters. We got to see Ben and Vivienne reconcile, and Violet and Tate were got together again after Madison explained to Violet that Tate’s evil left the Murder House with Michael’s exit. Tate also saved Vivienne when Michael tried to burn up her soul, so hopefully we can take that as a sign that it really was the Murder House that made him so evil.
‘Return to Murder House’ could not have been more satisfying for fans, as evidenced by the many excited reactions they shared during and after the episode. One fan tweeted QUOTE, “QUEEN SARAH PAULSON REALLY JUST DIRECTED THE BEST EPISODE IN AHS HISTORY HUH??” While another wrote QUOTE, “I'm here for this Madison Montgomery character development.”
Other fans used memes to express just how ICONIC some of the episode’s moments were, like when Tate screamed “You’re the only thing I need” at Violet, or when Moira was finally able to leave the Murder House to reunite with her mom. Talk about an emotional rollercoaster!
