The entertainment world is suffering a great loss today, as iconic comedian Joan Rivers has passed away at the age of 81.

Joan’s daughter Melissa Rivers released a statement announcing her mother’s death.

"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother."
She continued “[My son] Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated. My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."

On August 28, Joan underwent throat surgery in New York City, during which it’s reported that she suffered cardiac arrest. She was transferred to a hospital where she was sedated, put into a medically induced coma, and ultimately, she was put on life support before passing today.

Joan has played an important role in the entertainment industry for decades, and she was a frequent guest on shows such as The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. And in more recent years she became E!’s resident fashion expert where she’d display her quick wit and candor during red carpet events. Joan just wanted to make the world a better place through comedy and laughs – and she certainly did. She’d also give her no-holds barred opinion on celebrity fashion during E!’s Fashion Police. In fact, she was taking part in coverage for the Emmys and the MTV VMAs just days before undergoing the aforementioned throat surgery.

Celebrities took to Twitter to share their condolences, as YouTuber Tyler Oakley tweeted:
“Joan Rivers was a comedy icon. We got together a few months ago; incredible spirit, electric to work with. RIP.”
Victoria Justice also sent a tweet reading:
“I just heard the sad news... RIP Joan Rivers :( My sincerest condolences go out to her family.”

Joan leaves behind not only a daughter and a grandson, but a legion of adoring fans, and a career that truly left a mark. We are sending love to her family and friends. Joan Rivers, you will be missed greatly.
