Katy Perry is honored with the National Equality Award and opens up about her own sexuality during an emotional speech.
Katy Perry's connection to the LGBTQ+ community started at a very young age
And now she's opening up about the true meaning behind her song, I Kissed A Girl And I Liked It. Katy was honored with the National Equality Award at the 2017 Human Rights Campaign Gala, where she recalled her religious upbringing, using the hit jam as an example.
Katy said QUOTE "I Kissed A Girl and I liked it. Truth be told, I did more than that. But how was I going to reconcile that with the gospel-singing girl raised in youth groups that were pro-conversion camps?"
Katy went on to reveal how much that upbringing truly affected her outlook on sexuality.
But it wasn't long before Katy Perry realized she had a truly incredible talent, and she told the audience that it was her gift of singing that led her to the LGBTQ+ community.
And on a final, emotional note, Katy told the audience QUOTE "You don't get to choose your family, but you can choose your tribe."
Katy's honor comes as no surprise with the HRC president saying QUOTE "Her compelling advocacy, from the stage to the campaign trail, has had a profound effect on the lives of LGBTQ people -- and in particular, young people. Katy's message of inclusion and equality continues to inspire us and the world."
