Kylie Jenner lost the battle to trademark her first name to another Kylie who had the name first, Kylie Minogue.
That awkward moment when you try to own your name, but someone already has it.
In February of last year, Kylie saw an opportunity to capitalize on her brand so she applied to the U.S Parent and Trademark Office to buy her first name, but then Kylie Minogue was like um hi, I’ve had my name since before other Kylie was even born so no.
She even tweeted about it saying QUOTE – “Hello..... My name is KYLIE #lightyears.” In case you don’t know, Kylie Minogue is an Australian pop singer who has been in the industry for over 30 years. So when she heard that Kylie Jenner was trying to get a monopoly on their first name, she attempted to block the application and succeeded. The Patent Office officially rejected Kylie Jenner’s trademark application last week. But being the mogul that she is, Jenner has already put in for an appeal. To be fair, Kylie Minogue has owned kylie.com since 1996 which was before Kylie Jenner was even born. But to add even more tea to your sippin, According to the Daily Mail, Kylie Minogue’s legal team sent a letter to the US Patent and Trademark Office arguing that the trademark should not be allowed because Kylie Minogue is a QUOTE - “…internationally-renowned performing artist, humanitarian and breast cancer activist known worldwide simply as ‘Kylie', while Jenner is ‘a secondary reality television personality.” Ouch, that’s one way to put it. Sources have reported that Kylie Jenner wants to own the name Kylie to benefit her brand, but to be fair using her full name is still fair game. No doubt we will be hearing more about this in the future now that Kylie Jenner has submitted her appeal but in other Kylie news, Kylie and Kim K will be appearing in Kanye and Tyga’s music video for their collab called “Feel Me.” Word on the interwebs is that Kim shot parts of the music video in New York on the 31st of January. Of course this isn’t the first time Kylie and Kim have appeared in their men’s music videos and I’m sure we are in for a treat.
But I want to hear what you guys think about Kylie Minogue fighting Kylie Jenner on trademarking their name. So be sure to let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. Thanks for watching Clevver News, I’m your host Drew Dorsey and I’ll see you next time.
