Last night, Miley Cyrus spent her time on The Tonight Show wisely as she payed tribute to the many lives lost over the weekend at a country music festival in Las Vegas.
The devastating events took place on Sunday evening while Jason Aldean was performing on stage during the Route 91 Harvest Festival. What was supposed to be a fun night quickly turned into utter horror as shots were aggressively fired from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino down towards the festival crowd of around 22,000. As many of us already know, the results of the massacre included 59 dead and over 500 more injured, making it the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.
But, in true Miley fashion, she was not going to simply stand by in the wake of this tragic event and not use her voice to try and spread some positivity as we all try to cope with the tremendous loss of life. So, in honor of the victims of Sunday’s senseless tragedy, Miley performed two heartfelt songs that she thought would offer some level of comfort to the injured, to the victims’ families, and to Americans as a whole. Joined by Adam Sandler, the two first performed a duet of Dido’s “No Freedom.”
When she sat down with Jimmy, she shared why she chose that particular song, explaining that we can’t just stop seeing our favorite artists and going to concerts out of fear that something terrible like this is going to happen. If we do that, music loses its meaning because it’s meant to be listened to and enjoyed.
She said, QUOTE, “I think that right now we’re supposed to be the land of the free, but we can’t have freedom if we’re constantly living in fear. So, I think never bow down to bullies.” She went on to inspire a message of kindness and compassion, advising others to QUOTE, “Just constantly share hope instead of encouraging any more fear, you know?”
We LOVE Miley’s message, and we also love that she decided to close out the show by taking us back to 2009 with a performance of her hit, “The Climb.” The lyrics seem especially meaningful after this weekend, with the country facing an uphill battle as we mourn the many lives lost and continue the fight for stricter gun control.
So, what do you think about Miley’s message of hope and unity? Let us know in the comments and as always, don’t forget to subscribe. Thanks for watching Clevver News, I’m your host Erin White and I’ll see you next time!
