While playing Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds over the weekend PewDiePie dropped the racial slur as an insult towards another player. When another player started firing at him, he said “What a f*cking n****r,” and then called his opponent a “f*cking a**hole.”
PewDiePie then went on to slightly laugh and clarified that he didn’t mean that “in a bad way.” Uhm.. pretty sure there’s only one meaning behind the horrible word, and there’s no good meaning behind it that’s for sure. The gamer even goes as far to say that he always forgets that he’s livestreaming when playing games, as if that’s any excuse for his behavior.
Obviously fans, and even people who had never heard of him before, were outraged. This isn’t the first time that PewDiePie has said the n-word, and unlike that last time where people just “let it slide” because he was “joking”, fans and video game companies are taking a stand against the YouTuber.
Sean Vanaman, co-founder of the video game company Campo Santo, tweeted out his anger about the situation and announced that the brand is filing copyright claims on all of PewDiePie’s current and future videos that feature any of their games.
Just hours ago a new video titled “My Response” was uploaded to PewDiePie’s channel. We were already apprehensive because if the word ‘apology’ isn’t in the title, he can’t really be that sorry, can he?
In the minute and a half long video, PewDiePie addressed the situation by saying “I’m not going to make any excuses to why it did, because there are no excuses for it. I’m disappointed in myself because it seems like I learned nothing from all these past controversies. It’s not that I think I can say or do anything I want and get away with it, that’s not it at all. I’m just an idiot. But that doesn’t make what I said or how I said it okay. It was not okay. I’m really sorry if I offended, hurt, or disappointed anyone with all of this.”
He even went on to say that he was “in the heat of the moment” and that said “the worst word [he] could possibly think of and it just sort of slipped out.” A word associated with such hatred and racism does not just “slip out” if you ask us, and PewDiePie is going to have to do a lot more than just post a quick video to get out of this.
What do you think? Is PewDiePie really sorry and do you think the response to his racial slur is fair? Let us know in the comments below and then click here to see why Drake Bell said his feud with Josh Peck brought them closer. I’m Naz Perez, thanks for tuning in.
