Rihanna REACTS to that insensitive Snapchat Ad featuring her and Chris Brown.
Trust Riri to put an app to SHAME.
If you didn’t hear, Snapchat recently put out an ad for their “Would You Rather” game that asked users “Would you rather slap Rihanna, or punch Chris Brown”. Yeah, that’s an actual thing they had made and put on their app. Hundreds of users took to social media to complain about the tone deaf ad, that is obviously offensive because of the domestic violence incident that took place between Rihanna and Chris in in 2009. As we can all unfortunately recall, Chris had punched his then-girlfriend in a car and left her bloodied and bruised.
So cut to this week, and Snapchat is getting a ton of heat for the “Would You Rather” ad, and rightly so. Snapchat DID issue an apology for the graphic, that stated QUOTE, “The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry this happened.”
That apology didn’t suffice for many users, including Rihanna herself. The singer shared a statement slamming Snapchat that read QUOTE, “Now SNAPCHAT I know you already know you ain’t my fav app out there! But I’m just trying to figure out what the point was with this mess!” the 30-year-old singer wrote on her Instagram Story on Thursday, March 15. “I’d love to call it ignorance, but I know you ain’t that dumb! You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV [domestic violence] victims and made a joke of it!!! This isn’t about my personal feelings, cause I don’t have much of them … but all the women, children and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet …. you let us down! Shame on you. Throw the whole app-oligy away.”
Chris Brown’s lawyer also made a statement blasting Snapchat, simply saying QUOTE, “They should change their name from Snapchat to Tone Deaf”.
Hopefully all the backlash and Riri personally slamming the app herself will prevent this sort of thing from happening again, but are you guys as shocked as I am that this even got put on the ad in the first place? And what do you think Snapchat should do to further apologize? I’m thinking a large donation to help Domestic Violence victims, what do you guys think? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts below, and after that click right over here to check out Snapchat’s full apology for the ad. Thanks so much for joining me on News Feed, I’m your girl Joslyn Davis and I’ll see you next time!
