Snapchat gets a TON of backlash after approving, what many are calling a tone deaf ad that features both Rihanna and Chris Brown.
And if you asked me, I also think it’s tone deaf
As a reminder, back in 2009, Chris Brown was convicted of assaulting Rihanna in his car while the two were in relationship. So when Snapchat released an ad for the game “would you rather” that featured options to either slap Rihanna or punch Chris Brown, people, naturally, got very upset.
One user tweeted a screenshot of the ad, and captioned it QUOTE “Is it just me, or is this ad that popped up on my Snapchat extremely tone deaf? Like what were they thinking with this?”
Brittany Packnett then responded, QUOTE “I know that social media ads go through an approval process from the platform. This means @Snapchat approved an ad that makes light of domestic violence. The update ain’t the only thing that’s wack over there, friends.” She’s got a point, you guys.
But Snapchat got word of all the backlash and thankfully has since removed the ad and issued an apology. They attempted to explain what happened, telling BBC QUOTE, "The advert was reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines. We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened.”
Now I want to turn it over to you guys. Did you also find this ad to be completely tone deaf? And how do you feel now that Snapchat has apologized? Let me know all your thoughts and feelings down in the comments below, and when you’re done with that, click right over here for deets on Snapchat’s new true crime series. As always, I’m your host Renee Ariel and I’ll see you next time.
