In the past, performing at the Super Bowl Halftime show has always been a huge deal. Beyonce, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, all the heavy hitters have performed there so it’s always a hot topic to find out who will be chosen next. However there has been some major controversy and backlash surrounding the NFL so now people feel a little differently about it. And when I say a little, I mean complete boycotts.
It was announced recently that Maroon 5 has been selected to perform at next year’s Super Bowl which is taking place in Atlanta, but turns out they weren’t the NFL’s first choice.
Rihanna was originally asked to perform, but declined because she is not here for how the NFL has treated Colin Kaepernick who was the first player to kneel during the National Anthem as a symbol of disapproving of the many racial injustices in America. Kaepernick has not played in the league since 2017 and is currently in a legal battle against the NFL who pretty blatantly blacklisted him ever since the kneeling protests began.
Naturally fans were a little torn upon hearing that they almost got to see their fave perform at the Super Bowl, but for the most part fans are fans so they totally understand where Rihanna is coming from.
On Twitter a fan wrote QUOTE - “I think it's cool that Rihanna turned down the Super Bowl because she doesn't agree with their attempt to silence those who kneel. I think all artists should've joined forces and decided not to perform but you can't expect everyone to stand up for something important.” Another said - “Rihanna is really the realest out in these streets....”
While others threw a little shade at Kanye’s recent, lets say, complete 180 of who he used to be saying - “@nfl @SuperBowl NEVER invite her again. Invite Kanye West.” If you’re still scratching your head about what the punch line is supposed to be, they are referring to the fact that Kanye is a Trump supporter. But now that I think about it, it may not be a joke at all, and the person who wrote that tweet may be completely serious because well This is America.
Anyway, the Super Bowl is set for Feb 3rd with Maroon 5 as the Halftime performers, some sources are reporting that Cardi B may be joining them but it is all here say at this point in time.
