Roseanne went on a Twitter rant after ABC cancelled her revived sitcom this week, due to her making some incredibly racist comments. And when I say rant, I’m talking a more-than-one-hundred-tweets kinda rant.
To catch you up to speed, ABC confirmed that they were cancelling the “Roseanne” revival after the show’s star, Roseanne Barr, made offensive and racist comments about former Obama aide Valerie Jarrett. In a response to a comment about Valerie, who is African American, Roseanne tweeted QUOTE, "Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby = VJ."
The backlash was fast and furious, but in one Tweet in response to the outrage, Roseanne actually tried to blame sleep medication Ambien for her racist comments. She Tweeted QUOTE, "guys I did something unforgivable so do not defend me. It was 2 in the morning and I was ambien tweeting -- it was memorial day too -- i went 2 far & do not want it defended -- it was egregious Indefensible. I made a mistake I wish I hadn't but...don't defend it please."
In response to Roseanne’s ridiculous claim that “Ambien made me do it”, the company that makes Ambien tweeted QUOTE, “While all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication.” Okay that might be our favorite burn of 2018 so far.
Since the cancellation of her show, Roseanne has zig-zagged between repeating her apology and defending her actions. At one point she claimed that she’s been QUOTE, “belittled more than other comedians who have said worse”, and in another post she shared a side-by-side picture of Valerie Jarrett next to an ape. She also implied that her show was canceled due to her conservative political views, rather than her racist comments. To one fan she responded QUOTE, “i think i know what really happened. It has made me mad, but as I told u-i would leave when they started to try to censor me, so it all worked out”. Riiiiiiight.
Of course, she didn’t stop there. Many of her ‘Roseanne’ cast mates took to Twitter to share their outrage and disappointment with her actions, including Michael Fishman, who played Roseanne’s son DJ, and Sara Gilbert, who played Roseanne’s daughter Darlene. In response to Michael’s statement, which expressed the rest of the cast’s desire to make inclusivity a priority on the show, Roseanne replied QUOTE, “i created the platform for that inclusivity and you know it. You throw me under the bus. Nice!” And in response to Sara’s statement, which called Roseanne’s actions “abhorrent” Roseanne replied QUOTE, “Wow! Unreal.”
The only thing that’s unreal here is the fact that Roseanne is still actually trying to defend herself...and blame a sleeping pill for making her racist.
Okay guys now I wanna hear your thoughts on all this -- are you surprised Roseanne is still trying to defend her actions? And what do you think of her castmates’ reactions? Sound off in the comments, and then click right over here to see a Radio DJ get slammed for telling Taylor Swift to take a shower.
