FouseyCon was an event on July 15th put on by YouTuber Yousef Erakat who was primarily known for his viral prank videos.
Yousef appeared on Adam22’s No Jumper podcast just 5 days before the event he called “Hate Dies, Love Arrives”. He referred to it as the next Coachella, but then said he didn’t have a venue yet.
If you checked out his Twitter at the time it featured some erratic posts where he was pretty aggressively tweeting at people like Ellen DeGeneres, LeBron James, Steph Curry, and Kendrick Lamar to make special appearances. Which…. I don’t think is how you book celebrities for an event.
He also HEAVILY implied that Drake would be in attendance. He used his image in promotional tweets, and told a story about finding his residence and talking to him about this event in person….
Of course it came out later from a source close to Drake that he QUOTE, “definitely doesn’t know that guy and this is the first he has ever heard of him.”
Anyway, when critics began making comparisons between his event and the infamous TanaCon, he tweeted QUOTE, “time to show the world how things are done. my greater power and purpose has been awoken. time to rise up and take EVERYONE with me. wait till you see my speech to every YouTuber on stage.”
The event ended up attracting 1,500 people total and the biggest special guests were all YouTubers like Keemstar, FaZe Banks, Sam Pepper, and a few other livestreamers. Now it DID get a lot of attention. 50,000 people were watching a livestream of the event, but before anything could reaaally happen on stage--- it got shut down.
The entire venue was evacuated after a bomb threat was called in. It was apparently a swatting incident where someone calls in a fake threat as a joke. It’s a weirdly popular incident in the lives of livestreamers on Twitch. Anyway it’s still unclear if someone on Fousey’s team called in the threat because …. none of the performers were actually there??? Or if someone watching from home wanted to play a prank.
After everyone was evacuated to the parking lot, Yousef stood on top of a car to speak directly to everyone there. Honestly he speaks for a while, but a lot of it is actually concerning. He speaks about his depression and bipolar disorder and how his numbers and levels of fame, and according to him, Keemstar, have made him want to take his own life.
The response from viewers and fans of Yousef’s was overwhelming concern. Many tweets pleaded him to seek professional help because his behavior was indicative of his bipolar disorder which he has opened up about in the past.
He once again appeared on Adam22’s podcast, but this time with Shane Dawson. In that interview he expressed hurt for those assumptions.
He said QUOTE, “What people call crazy is literally me just trying to show a true sense of authenticity,” Erakat said.
Honestly, Shane didn’t have a lot to say. He basically said what we were all thinking: why would any creator want to host their own event after TanaCon? He actually left the interview when things started to get a little out of hand.
PewDiePie chimed in on the event saying in a video QUOTE, “Stop having YouTuber events. Stop. Just stop. Why did he come up with this idea? TanaCon did an event in 30 days and it was a complete disaster; I’m going to do an event in seven days. I can prove that I can make a bigger disaster. You think you’re worse than me, Tana? No, I’m worse.”
In response to PewDiePie’s video, Fousey posted his own. While it’s mostly a voiceover of an inspirational speech with clips from the failed event, the part that sparked the most questions was the very end.
So it looks like he’s already planning his next event. Whether or not he’s already booked the Staples Center is beyond me, but let’s just hope he’ll give it more than 7 days of planning.
