When Shawn Mendes dropped the lead single, “In My Blood” off of his brand new album two months ago, fans instantly knew this was his most personal project to date. Rather than a typical song about love or heartbreak, Shawn got real about his struggle with anxiety in the lyrics, and of course, it really resonated with fans.
Lately, while promoting Shawn Mendes: The Album (which dropped today), Shawn’s really been opening up about his struggles. In a recent interview with Vulture, he even mentioned that he used to break down in tears once a week, and even though we hate to hear that, we totally understand how that level of fame could get overwhelming.
According to Vulture, Shawn first began his battle with anxiety around his 18th birthday. He said, QUOTE, “I was so worried people were going to be like, ‘This kid’s always sad’.” And although we were in the dark about what he was going through at that time, “In My Blood” let’s us in on the reality of what he was feeling. Plus, it sends an important message to fans that anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of, and that many of us struggle with it. He added, QUOTE, “People I haven’t spoken to in years were texting and emailing me being like, ‘Dude, this is so important that you did this.’ ” Wow… we couldn’t agree more!
So, what exactly was causing Shawn so much anxiety? Well, according to him, he attributes much of his anxiety to the rapid onslaught of success that he experienced. He said, QUOTE, “I was in such a bad head space. It’s so overwhelming to be successful. And that sounds like such a sh*tty thing to say. But it’s like, how do you keep it going? How do you sustain success when you don’t even really know why you’re successful? Dude, it was the worst. I’d break down in tears once a week. I used to think everybody was out to get me.”
Clearly, Shawn’s been through a lot and has grown a lot too over the past several years, but we think it’s awesome that he’s now showing fans this very raw side of him, which is one that many of us can relate to!
