Shawn Mendes‘ new song, “In My Blood,” is one of the most powerful tracks he has ever released, probably because it’s a raw, honest reflection of his personal struggle with anxiety.
The 19-year-old previously admitted QUOTE “[Anxiety] was something that hit me within the last year. Before that, growing up, I was a pretty calm kid, super steady.”
Shawn now reveals that he QUOTE “spoke to a therapist a couple of times” in order to get his anxiety under control and ultimately tried to become more open with his friends and family so that they could help him get through what he was dealing with.
He says QUOTE “I made a conscious effort to be more connected to the people in my life. I found I was closing myself off from everybody, thinking that would help me battle it, then realizing the only way I was going to battle it was opening up and letting people in. People forget how important it is to talk to family and friends about what’s going on in your life. The more you tell people how you feel, the more you understand it and have more control of your emotions.”
Shawn didn’t always struggle with his mental health and therefore knows how hard it is for people who don’t suffer to understand.
He adds QUOTE “All pain is temporary, and the thing is with anxiety, and why it’s such a hard thing for people who don’t have it to understand, is that it’s very random, it hits you when you don’t expect it. Sometimes it lasts two hours, sometimes it lasts a day and sometimes it lasts five minutes.
The one thing that can be done to combat that is to talk about it and, for me, to make a song about it. […] The point of the song is that no matter how long that lasts, you can come out the other end stronger. And you come out on the other end always.”
So many people have problems with their mental health and it’s amazing to hear A-list celebrities speaking out about their own struggles. Shawn has millions of fans and his words can definitely make a difference in many people’s lives. What do you think about the singer admitting he saw a therapist for his anxiety?
