Just like many cities around the world, Kuala Lumpur has its own share of the homeless—people who, sometimes due to chance or choice, are forced to wander and sleep on the streets of the city. Many of these unfortunate people often spend their days hungry, unsure of when they’ll get their next meal—this is where the kind souls of soup kitchens come into the picture.
Soup kitchens are places where they prepare and provide basic meals to those who are less fortunate—not only the homeless, but perhaps for struggling parents, the elderly, the hardcore poor, and others.
PERTIWI, or the Pertubuhan Tindakan Wanita Islam (Islamic Women Action Organization) operates one of the most active soup kitchens in the city. The PERTIWI Soup Kitchen distributes hundreds of packets of food every other night, powered by strong corporate support as well as groups of caring volunteers.
At the PERTIWI Soup Kitchen, the needy can also expect to find basic health check and services, as well as other things such as haircuts and used clothes to help with making living day-to-day a bit easier.
