In case you didn’t already get the reference, that was an ode to the princess of pop music herself, Britney Spears, and the EPIC mashup we never knew we needed until now. All thanks to YouTuber AnDyWuMUSICLAND and his brilliant mind, a brand new mashup of Taylor’s newest single and Britney Spears’ 2003 hit “Toxic” was created, and it might just be the best thing to hit the Internet since Beyonce’s baby annoucement. Check it out...
Soooo, petition to get this on some sort of ‘deluxe’ Reputation track or something, because I need this in my life STAT. In the remix, Taylor’s version of the song is sped up while Brit’s unmistakable “Toxic” back track harmonizes perfectly along with the tune. Together, the two tracks create some sort of femme fatale heist soundtrack, and we are living for it.
It’s also no coincidence that Taylor’s brilliant music video director for “Look What You Made Me Do” among many of her other tracks was also the mastermind behind Britney’s iconic flight attendant-inspired “Toxic” music video.
On that note, although Taylor’s music video has been compared to Beyonce’s Lemonade video and Miley Cyrus’ “Can’t Be Tamed” video, as well as many other comparisons, the Internet was quick to point out that she’s flaunting some major Britney vibes. Many were quick to point out that the Old-Hollywood, red lipstick Taylor bathing in diamonds was channeling Britney circa her “Lucky” phase.
The black leather-clad Taylor wrangling a group of plastic robots gave many fans “Toxic” vibes, as Brit spoted a catsuit and red accents, and Taylor’s scarlet ringleader costume gave us all “Circus” era déjà vu.
However, some Twitter users expressed their distaste for too much of a comparison to Britney, because, naturally, Taylor can’t seem to catch a break. One user wrote, “Taylor Swift trying to be a Britney Spears bad girl sounds like a guidance counselor trying to make a rap song about how drugs aren't cool” and another said, “I could see Britney Spears doing that Taylor swift song and video. And the bad girl image would be more believable.”
There will always be criticism no matter what she does, as we’ve come to learn, but all in all, the reaction to the “Toxic” mashup has been mostly positive… so seriously, I’m not kidding when I say that this needs to be a song I can add to my next workout playlist. But I gotta know all your thoughts on the new mashup, so get to talking down here in the comments, and after that, click right over here to see all the records Taylor’s music video broke in just 24 hours – talk all you want, this girl’s still on top. Thanks for hanging out with me here on Clevver News, I’m your host Renee Ariel and I’ll see you next time.
