Vogue just released its March issue celebrating diversity in beauty and fashion, and some critics are already crying “photoshop”...
The “Women Rule!” cover shows Gigi, Kendall, and Ashley, along with 4 other gorgeous models, sporting black turtlenecks and high-waisted multi-colored shorts on a beach. But a closer look at the picture has some accusing the magazine of trying to make Ashley Graham, a plus-sized model, look thinner via doctoring the photo and having her pose differently than the other girls.
One suspicious thing critics pointed out was the fact that Gigi’s arm stretches allllll the way over to Ashley’s waist, which doesn’t appear to look all that natural and makes her hand look much longer than normal. Others also pointed out the fact that Ashley is the only model with her hand resting on her thigh, which some have suggested could have been a way the magazine tried to hide Ashley’s curvier physique. But after a series of negative comments pointing those things out, Ashley took to the comments to clap back, writing QUOTE, “I chose to pose like that...no one told me to do anything”.
Okay that explains the hand on the leg but I still want an explanation for Gigi’s arm and hand extending that far--maybe I’m crazy, but since when were her fingers that long?!
But let’s move on to the more positive side of the issue...Inside the magazine Ashley opened up about the fashion industry finally adapting to include all shapes and sizes. She explained QUOTE, "Sixty-seven percent of the women in America wear a size 14 or larger...Maybe you could ignore those consumers before, but now, thanks to social media, they're making their voices heard. Women are demanding that brands give them what they want. And what they want is to be visible."
Kendall and Gigi also spoke about the more inclusive direction that the fashion and beauty industries are taking, with Kendall saying QUOTE, “With all that’s going on in the world, this cover makes such an important statement. It’s like, hey, we’ve got our differences, but those differences are beautiful. Everyone is beautiful.” Can’t argue with that!
Gigi also opened up about being called an “all-American, girl next door” type, explaining QUOTE, “It’s funny to me when people say that I’m this ‘girl next door’ because although I know I can come off that way, from another angle, I’m pretty exotic….If I’m ‘all-American,’ what does that even mean? But then again my parents came to this country as poor immigrants. So…maybe I’m pretty damn all-American after all. Not because of how I look but because I truly believe everyone should be equal and free.”
Preach, Gigi, preach! Alright guys now I wanna know what YOU think of the Vogue cover--do you think there might be some sketchy photoshopping going on behind the scenes? And what do you think about what Ashley, Gigi, and Kendall had to say about the changing fashion industry? Sound off in the comments and after that be sure to subscribe to Clevver News!
