Flying Horse Takapuna is a Takapuna institution. An old school Chinese takeaway that’s been around since 1977. In 2020, Joanna Seto, a first generation Chinese Kiwi took over the business from her parents Joe & Joyce Seto.
Chinese takeaways hold a special place in Kiwi food culture- in the 70s and 80s often the first neighbourhood takeaway shop (aside from the fish and chip shop) was a Chinese takeaway. The food found at these takeaways the sweet and sour pork, wontons, fried rice was the first taste of Chinese cuisine for many kiwis. It’s Chinese food that was adapted to suit the kiwi palate and over time has morphed into its own cuisine.
Sheena grew up in a Chinese takeaway and with so many similarities between her and Joanna’s story - we just knew we had to film a video about Flying Horse Takapuna and the Seto family. We can’t wait to share this local institution with you….
Huge thanks to Joanna, Joe, Joyce and the Flying Horse Takapuna team for allowing us to film and share their story. You guys rock!

We’re Thomas and Sheena, food and travel fiends. We travel full time, hunting for the BEST local food in the world to showcase via our YouTube videos. Food is a window into a country's culture and one of the most exciting ways to get to know a place.
We're all about eating what and where the locals eat. You won't find food that's been created merely to be social media worthy on here- no rainbow bagels, gold leaf soft serves- just genuine, authentic food that tastes incredible.
From street food to mom and pop restaurants, we want to show you the best and most authentic food we find on our travels.
