On Monday night, his longtime manager, Tony Dimitriades, confirmed that he had passed. In a statement, he wrote:
"On behalf of the Tom Petty family,, we are devastated to announce the untimely death of of our father, husband, brother, leader and friend Tom Petty. He suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu in the early hours of this morning and was taken to UCLA Medical Center but could not be revived. He died peacefully at 8:40 p.m. PT surrounded by family, his bandmates and friends.”
TMZ reported that Tom Petty was rushed to the hospital on Sunday after he was found unconscious after suffering a full cardiac arrest. The 66-year old singer was rushed to the UCLA Santa Monica hospital in critical condition, but after doctors discovered he had no brain activity a decision was made to pull him off life support.
Tom Petty, who is best known as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, as well as an American Icon in the Music Industry as a singer/songwriter, had more than a few fans in the celebrity community. Today, many of those celebs have taken to Twitter to share their sadness and shock over the news of his sudden death…
Songwriter, producer, and Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff heartbreakingly tweeted QUOTE, “tom petty changed my life. there is a reference to him in everything i've ever written. i love his work and life.”
Meanwhile Stephen Colletti shared a nostalgic black and white picture of Tom at one of his concerts, along with the simple caption QUOTE, “Thank you for so much, Tom Petty.”’
Fellow rocker Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue Tweeted out his gratitude for Tom’s musical talents, as well wishes for Tom’s family and bandmates, writing QUOTE, “Tom Petty. One of the greatest songwriters of our generation.Thank you for ALL the music.Prayers to your family & band members.#RIPTomPetty”
Singer Josh Groban also shared his devastation, writing QUOTE, “What a horrid day for our country, music fans and music itself. RIP Tom Petty. His songs are always good medicine. Love to his family.”
Christina Perri was equally heartbroken with her simple Tweet of QUOTE,” tom petty? i can’t even breathe” followed by a broken heart emoji.
