The first season of 13 Reasons covered the entirety of the book that the show is based on by Jay Asher. But the ending packed in a lot of cliffhangers that didn’t appear in the book with the hopes they would get a follow up season, and it worked.
The second season starts with a civil lawsuit being filed against the school for apparently failing Hannah Baker. Without giving any spoilers, because not all of us can binge watch 13 hours at midnight, we’re going to give you a few of the less flattering reviews!
Metro UK said QUOTE, “Instead of proving to be a natural follow-up, 13 Reasons Why’s second outing is misguided and muddled – lacking both the narrative urgency and a worthwhile reason to return to Hannah Baker’s story.”
USA Today gave the season one star and got toooo shady saying, "We don't need 13 more reasons.” and added QUOTE, “The second season of Netflix's 13 Reasons Why is a tawdry, unnecessary exercise, a blatant grab for the headlines the teen suicide drama garnered last year. The new season tries to make a point about rape culture, slut shaming and sexual harassment, but its depiction of these complex topics has all the subtlety of a sledge hammer.”
The Guardian was a liiittle less savage saying, "There's a lot of dragging through the same stuff all over again. But this time without the framework of the tapes and the reasons. As drama, this is pointless, cumbersome, baggy, badly written, ponderous and boring."
But with all negative reviews, there HAD to be some positives!! Entertainment Weekly reviewed Season 2 saying QUOTE, “Though 13 Reasons Why can sometimes be as exasperating and melodramatic as teenagers themselves, the second season nets out as a success.”
And NME had a nice spin to its review saying QUOTE, “Ultimately, season two does enough to justify its existence and you'll likely binge-watch it faster than the first. Those who say it's run its course are missing the point. 13 Reasons Why was never about one girl's suicide. It's about endemic problems with society and shining a light on the [issues] young people have to deal with on a daily basis."
But to be blatantly honest here, the hunt to find positive reviews of the second season are significantly more difficult than finding negative ones. But we want to hear from you, does this deter you from watching the show? Or are you going to say bye to the haters and binge the show the second you get a chance? Orr have you already seen it and have a different opinion?
