Demi Lovato opens up in a recent interview about her past addictions and eating disorder, revealing that there was a time when she thought she’d die young, not even making it to age 21.
Demi has proved to be such a strong woman by sharing her insecurities and past addictions with the world which truly helps so many people.
In the July issue of “American Way,” the inflight magazine for American Airlines, the pop star revisited her past and spoke about personal struggles she’s overcome.
During the interview, she recalled using alcohol, cocaine, and oxycontin to self-medicate herself, saying that she “couldn’t go without 30 minutes to an hour without cocaine” and that sometimes she would even sneak some onto airplanes.
Demi also revealed that she believed she lived fast and was going to die young. Saying QUOTE: “I didn’t think I would make it to 21.”
In case you don’t remember, back in 2010, the then 18-year old Demi famously made the news for punching a backup dancer while on tour with The Jonas Brothers. Not long after that, she entered rehab where she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and bulimia.
While in rehab she recalls her symptoms were getting more under control, but mentioning, QUOTE: “I’m not in treatment for a drug and alcohol problem. But once I started eating again, the other issues got worse. It was like whack-a-mole.”
Demi also entered a sober house in 2013, where she stayed for almost a year. The singer told American Way that she took her last drink in January 2012, and continues to attend alcoholics anonymous meetings. Just this past March, Demi celebrated four years of sobriety. You go girl!
But sadly, Demi’s battle with body image began long before she was officially diagnosed. Speaking on her mom’s issues with eating disorders, Demi explained to the mag just how much it really affected her. Saying QUOTE: “Even though I was 2 or 3 years old. Being around somebody who was 80 pounds and had an active eating disorder…it’s hard not to grow up like that.”
Demi also admitted that she started competing in beauty pageants at a very young age, and that she attributes some of her insecurities to being judged for her beauty. She even stated that by age 9 she was binge eating and by age 12 she was binging, purging, and began cutting herself in school.
However nowadays, Demi uses her fame to raise awareness for body image and inspiring fans by overcoming her previous struggles. The singer admits, QUOTE: “When I have meet-and-greets, I can’t tell you the amount of times that girls will show my their arms covered in scars or cuts. They’ll tell me, ‘You helped me get through this. Because of you, I stopped self-harming, or I got sober.’ Hearing those things gave my life new meaning.”
