Did Descendants 2 really cut out a guy-on-guy kiss scene from the movie?
It sure looks like it.
When Descendants 2 premiered on the Disney Channel on July 21st fans didn’t know there was one major lip lock missing from the movie. What fans saw was Dove Cameron’s character Mal and Mitchell Hope’s character Ben get together romantically. What fans didn’t see was Thomas Doherty’s character Harry Hook and Dylan Playfair’s character Gil engaging in an intense on-screen smooch.
But we know it happened because we have photo proof. Both actors shared a picture of the deleted scene on their Instagram accounts. Thomas captioned his photo of the kiss, “what will you tell your kids you did on July 21st? #descendants2 #premier A truly, inspiring, beautiful human being.” While Dylan wrote, “An accurate representation of my year to date… #descendants2 #love #Magic.” Judging by their joking comments the scene is one both of them will never forget.
So why was the scene cut and what’s the backstory here? Turns out the two characters kiss in the book version of Descendants 2. And thanks to Tumblr we’ve gotten the exact passage from the book which reads: “The pirates cheered and whooped. They drummed on the table and kicked their legs up in the air and clapped their gloved hands and high fived. Harry locked lips with Gil. The pirates danced, twirling triumphantly as if they were on the yacht. Their time had come.” So while it doesn’t seem like a ROMANTIC kiss, it’s still an unseen kiss and is getting a lot of attention.
Obviously fans are experiencing some major FOMO. One fan tweeted, “you know. I think i’d be less pissed about them cutting the harry/gil kiss if I didn’t know for certain that they’d filmed it.” Well, it turns out- THEY DIDN’T CUT IT OUT! HollywoodLife is reporting that a Disney Channel rep has revealed the truth- and that is that the kiss was never in the movie. At any point. Ever. The source said QUOTE ““This depiction is not in the movie and was not scripted or directed – it was an improvised moment by actors on the set.”
Either way, Disney didn’t really need the kiss for the sequel to be a hit, it drew in 13 million viewers on the premiere night alone. Do you guys ship hashtag #Garry? Or are you glad the smooch wasn’t in the movie? Thanks so much for tuning in to Clevver, I’m your host Sinead de Vries.
