Ed Sheeran is one of the top singer/songwriters in the game, so a couple of fellow songwriters suing him for stealing the song “Photograph” is more than a little shocking.
Songwriters Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard wrote a song called “Amazing” for British singer and X-Factor winner Matt Cardle back in 2012. Now, they’re claiming that Ed completely ripped off the song and turned it into his award-winning hit, “Photograph.” Before you draw any conclusions solely based on your love and devotion to Ed Sheeran, take a listen to “Amazing”...
And in case it hasn’t been stuck in your head forever, here’s what Photograph sounds like…
Okay. So they are undeniably similar, yes, but a blatant rip off? That’s a tough call, not to mention it’s really hard to believe that Ed Sheeran, who is one of the most prolific writers we have today, went ahead and knowingly ripped off a fellow artist’s music. But according to the songwriters of Amazing, “Photograph” allegedly contains 39 notes that are QUOTE, “identical in pitch, rhythmic duration, and placement in the measure” to Matt Cardle’s 2012 song. Translation: These guys think Ed heard “Amazing” and decided that it was “amazing” enough to steal and turn into a more amazing song called “Photograph”. And now they want $20 million for damages.
Ed and his label have yet to comment on the suit, while Matt Cardle is probably just happy for the free publicity boost and views. One thing that no one in this case can deny at least, is that Photograph is a much better song. No offense, “Amazing”.
But what do you guys think? Did Ed Sheeran really steal a song, or is it just a coincidence that they sound kinda similar? Let me hear all of your thoughts in the comments below.
