The new High School Musical TV series reveals its title AND character details!
Are you ready to getcha getcha head in the game?
Disney’s highly anticipated High School Musical TV series is currently in pre-production, and things are moving steadily along. The name of the show will be ‘High School Musical: The Musical’, which doesn’t really tell us anything except that this is a story about a high school musical at a high school. Which we’re totally game for!
Here’s what we know so far: The show will be a 10-episode story shot docu-series style, and it’ll be released on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, which is launching next year and is set to rival Netflix and other streaming services.
The plot for High School Musical: The Musical will QUOTE, “follow a group of students at East High who stage a performance of High School Musical for their winter theater production, only to realize that as much drama happens off-stage as on stage.” And each episode will feature a song from the High School Musical movies, as well as an original song. So get ready for some new songs to sing along to!
The casting of the show is currently underway for the 8 series regulars of the show, and the character breakdowns give even more info into what we can expect. First, there’s Ricky, described as QUOTE, “A snarky sweetheart, a B-minus student, and our star. Ricky's been dating fellow junior Nini for a year. When she unexpectedly breaks up with Ricky, he launches a bold plan to get Nini back -- by auditioning to star opposite her in the school's production of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL.”
Ricki’s ex, Nini, is described as QUOTE, “Formerly relegated to the chorus of her school's musicals, Nini just got back from summer camp, where she found her voice – and confidence -- playing the lead in THE MUSIC MAN. Unfortunately, Nini also found a new boyfriend at camp. Drama. Fiercely loyal to her two moms, she’s stronger than she first appears: an iron butterfly.”
Nini’s new boyfriend is EJ, who is QUOTE, “the type of ambitious entrepre-nerd who brings homemade props to auditions. Don’t cross E.J. if you get something he wants -- like a starring role, opposite "his" girl Nini.”
Other notable characters include the brash and gutsy Ashlyn, a skate rat named Big Red, the entitled Gina, student choreographer Vikram, and Miss Jenn -- the school’s new drama teacher from New York who loves musicals but is hiding a personal secret under her can-do attitude.
