Many fans are super upset with the fact that Claudia Kim was casted as Nagini, but JK Rowling’s response pretty much put all the haters back in their places.
JK Rowling has spoken.
When the final trailer for ‘Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald’ made its debut earlier this week, fans of the Harry Potter series were ESTATIC to find out that the biggest fan theory surrounding Nagini’s character was revealed.
However, it didn’t take long after the trailer’s release for people to start expressing their disappointment in the casting choice. As you all know, South Korean actress Claudia Kim was chosen for this role and although it may have seemed like a win for Asian representation, many people on social media actually saw this casting choice to be problematic. Especially since in the books, Nagini is a submissive character who eventually comes the property of Lord Voldemort, a male blood supremacist.
One Twitter user sarcastically wrote QUOTE, “Broke: Asian women as love interests for white male protagonists. Woke: Asian women brainwashed, transfigured into a giant snake and kept as a pet/slave for 60 years by white male antagonists, then decapitated by a teenager.”
While another wrote QUOTE, “I like Claudia Kim. I’m glad she’s getting work and it seems like she has a cool take on the role. I’m sure she will bring humanity, dignity, and vulnerability to Nagini. But also…Did it have to be Nagini?”
Young Adult writer Ellen Oh also commented on the casting matter and wrote QUOTE, “I feel like this is the problem when white people want to diversify and don’t actually ask POC how to do so. They don’t make the connection between making Nagini an Asian woman who later on is the pet of a white man. So I’m going to say it right now. That shit is racist. Does this mean I now hate Harry Potter? No. I still love it. But let’s make it clear. Harry Potter is problematic AF. So let’s discuss it now so that our future generation of writers who create the next blockbuster books and movies can do better.”
Although so many people have commented and pointed out how problematic the casting of Claudia as Nagini is, one fan managed to get an answer out of JK with a pretty direct tweet.
The fan mentioned JK Rowling directly and tweeted QUOTE, “Listen Joanne, we get it, you didn’t include enough representation when you wrote the books. But suddenly making Nagini into a Korean woman is garbage. Representation as an afterthought for more woke points is not good representation.”
And JK responded right back with QUOTE, “The Naga are snake-like mythical creatures of Indonesian mythology, hence the name ‘Nagini.’ They are sometimes depicted as winged, sometimes as half-human, half-snake. Indonesia comprises a few hundred ethnic groups, including Javanese, Chinese, and Betawi. Have a lovely day.”
