Jude Law finally addresses Dumbledore’s sexuality in ‘Fantastic Beasts’ for the first time.
But just like his character, Jude knows how to keep us guessing.
When Harry Potter fans found out that Jude Law would be portraying a young Dumbledore in the upcoming ‘Fantastic Beasts’ sequel, one question on everyone’s mind was would the film explore Dumbledore’s sexual orientation and romantic relationships at all? JK Rowling herself revealed years ago that Dumbledore is gay, so naturally many fans were hoping to see the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ movies go deeper into that aspect of his life.
However, those hopes were seemingly quashed when the film’s director, David Yates, said that Dumbledore was QUOTE “not explicitly gay” in the upcoming film.
That comment lead to disappointment and frustration from lots of fans, but despite all the hype, Jude Law hasn’t spoken about how is character’s sexuality WILL be portrayed in the upcoming film - until now.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jude explained QUOTE, “Jo Rowling revealed some years back that Dumbledore was gay. That was a question I actually asked Jo and she said, yes, he’s gay. But as with humans, your sexuality doesn’t necessarily define you; he’s multifaceted. I suppose the question is: How is Dumbledore’s sexuality depicted in this film? What you got to remember this is only the second Fantastic Beasts film in a series and what’s brilliant about Jo’s writing is how she reveals her characters, peels them to the heart over time. You’re just getting to know Albus in this film, and there’s obviously a lot more to come. We learn a little about his past in the beginning of this film, and characters and their relationships will unfold naturally which I’m excited to reveal. But we’re not going to reveal everything all at once.”
Okay, so basically it sounds like they’re not going to be diving too deep into Dumbledore’s romantic history in this film, BUT we definitely have hope given the fact that there are going to be five ‘Fantastic Beast’ movies in total. And like Jude pointed, out, if there’s one thing JK Rowling is a pro at -- it’s slowly revealing the truth of her characters through their actions over time.
