It was all celebrity hands on deck during the “Hand in Hand: Benefit for Hurricane Relief” telethon, and everyone from Justin Bieber to Oprah volunteered their time and voices to help the relief effort.
Stevie Wonder opened the Telethon with a stunning performance of “Lean On Me”, and also threw some major shade at climate change deniers, saying QUOTE,” We’ve come together today to love on the people that have been devastated by the hurricanes...we should begin to love and value our planet and anyone who believes there is no such thing as global warming must be blind or unintelligent” Tell ‘em, Stevie!
Other performances came from stars like Demi Lovato, Tori Kelly, Usher, and Blake Shelton. All the performers sang heartfelt and moving cover ballads that were more than fitting for the occasion, including Usher and Blake, who sang a stunning duet of “Stand By Me”.
Beyonce, a Houston native herself, wasn’t able to be in attendance to perform at the Telethon, but she did record a clip reminding viewers that natural disasters don’t discriminate, and that the victims of Hurricane Harvey range in age, socioeconomic background, religion, and skin color.
Selena Gomez also recorded a video for the Telethon where she broke down in tears while telling the story of a family who tragically lost their lives during the storm.
Meanwhile Justin Bieber answered calls throughout the night and introduced a non-denominational prayer for the victims.
Dozens of other celebs worked the telephones to collect donations from viewers, including Gwen Stefani, Hilary Duff, DJ Khaled, Justin Timberlake, and Nicki Minaj--who went an extra step and encouraged her Twitter followers to donate, as well.
Billy Crystal said it best when he closed the show saying QUOTE, “This is what America is all about…a gathering of people from all across the country.” Amen to that!
