Katy Perry is officially the first judge to join the new American Idol reboot!
And don’t worry, the world HAS reacted!
Yesterday Katy Perry was on hand in New York City at ABC’s Upfronts presentation where she was announced as the first judge for the new American Idol. Katy quickly took to Twitter to confirm the news, sharing her official AI promo photo and writing, “SO thrilled @ABCNetwork is bringing back @AmericanIdol, and I’m bringing it back to the MUSIC. See you at auditions!”
American Idol shared the same sentiment on Twitter revealing QUOTE, “We are ecstatic to welcome @KatyPerry as a judge on ABC’s #AmericanIdol! #KatyonIdol”. In a press release Katy continued the mutual love writing QUOTE, “I am honored and thrilled to be the first judge bringing back the American Idol tradition of making dreams come true for incredible talents with authentic personalities and real stories. I’m always listening to new music, and love discovering diamonds in the rough - from mentoring young artists on my label, or highlighting new artists on my tours, I want to bring it back to the music."
But the Internet has mixed reactions on the news with one fan writing, “@katyperry you def should’ve said no to @americanidol- this is bound to be a terrible, ill-timed reboot.”
Old contestants are also getting in on the conversation. Rumor has it Chris Daughtry will also be a judge on the reboot, and has received some shade from AI winner Taylor Hicks. In an interview the Idol winner said QUOTE, “I think a winner should be a judge, personally. Because, what you go through to win the show is a lot different than what you go through when your’e third or fourth, you know, or fifth.” Both Taylor and Chris competed on the fifth season, with Chris coming in fourth and Taylor winning the season.
The drama isn’t over there. The show has made the big jump from Fox to ABC just one year after it’s farewell. But the talks to bring it back started right after the series ended. Fox executive Dana Walden told the press that it feels “bad” that the show is coming back on another network. Fox wanted to wait until 2020 to reboot but the show wanted to come back sooner. Dana said QUOTE, “It felt to us, sitting in those initial meetings, that it would be extremely fraudulent to bring the show back that quickly…”
It seems OG judge Simon Cowell agrees. Simon recently revealed to Extra that ABC did ask him to come back, and he told them he wasn’t interested. Do you guys think AI coming back after just one season off is too soon? And what do you think of Katy Perry as a new judge? Leave your thoughts below! After that- you gotta check out the 2nd episode of Clevver’s heartfelt new series about Erin’s medical scare called: It Got Real. I’m your host XXX XXX, thanks so much for tuning in to Clevver!
